Eating out
Here are just a few of the great places to eat nearby. For a full list download our Explorations booklet here. We recommend that you always book first, as these places are all very popular
The Rusty Pig in Ottery St Mary is a fun, relaxed bistro. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is a fan. Dinner is usually a set menu with few choices, so let them know if you are vegetarians/vegans. Always wise to ring first to book: 01404 815580.
The Golden Lion 01404 812881 in Tipton St John is our nearest pub. It has a good chef and great gastropub menu, is charming and quaint by the River Otter with a nice garden.
The Pig at Combe 01404 540400 Fabulous manor house with friendly welcome and relaxed, hip approach to dining, very cool atmosphere. A cheaper option is to drop into The Folly, a casual café with wood-fired oven in the grounds.
Otterton Mill 01395 568031 Beautiful 1,000 year old working water mill, now serving excellent teas/light meals, plus craft shops and on a very nice walk along the River Otter to Budleigh Salterton. Great place for a cream tea.
The River Exe Cafe On a barge in the middle of the River Exe, with terrific fine dining food and a lot of fun. Get there by River Taxi from Exmouth, call 07761 116103 to book a table.
Shopping
There’s great shopping to be found nearby the farm. Although we are in a beautiful and rural location, it’s easy to find everything from food to gifts nearby.
For more information on shopping, download our Explorations booklet here.
Knights Farm Shop is a short distance from the farm and well worth a visit. They can also deliver delicious local produce hampers to the farm to be ready for you when you arrive. For full details of the Knights Farm Shop hamper delivery service, visit here.
Our local village of West Hill has a small shop (McColls) open 7am-8pm 7 days per week. Ideal for bread, milk, papers and basic supplies. Ottery St Mary is our nearest small town (2.5 miles away) and has a good range of independent shops including baker, fishmonger, wine merchant, bookshop and greengrocer. There is also a large Sainsbury’s with Argos in the centre of the town.
We recommend Knights Farm Shop and you can walk there off road from Cuckoo Down Farm. They also deliver hampers to the glamping site. Slightly further afield, we recommend Greendale Farm Shop and Darts Farm. Both are huge, with cafes, takeaways, children’s areas and farm animals.
The cathedral city of Exeter is 12 miles from the farm, with everything from John Lewis to quirky independent stores. Check out medieval Gandy Street, said to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter stories. Honiton is six miles away and full of nice cafes and independent shops. Topsham, Exeter’s historic port (12 miles) is full of quaint architecture and charming shops, especially good for antiques, in a beautiful riverside setting.
